Random Video Game Rant & Madden 09

When I think of video games for my PS3, I usually think of them based upon a timeframe for which certain games come out.

For example, being a huge sports fan, in the spring time, I look forward to MLB The Show, a baseball game coming out, which results in my summer baseball fix. Playing this game throughout the summer prooves to be a fun chore, as getting through a 162 game season is always an interesting task (one I am currently trying to do with the Minnesota Twins).

When the summer is over, fall hits and then the gaming shifts to football season, as both NCAA/Madden football games get released. Being the sucker I usually am, I purchase both games made by EA Sports and play football games during the brisk fall months. Finally when winter draws near, I get my hands on the new NHL/NBA video games that have come out for the year.

Sure, I also occaisionally buy games that come out once every couple years such as GTA IV, Burnout and Hot Shots Golf, but for the most part, I purchase sports games in a yearly cycle, as each year I buy 3-5 sports games in a year cycle. I always seem to buy the game after it comes out, and when that sports season is over, that game either gets sold, or it begins to collect dust in my DVD rack.

Seems like each year gets divided up into four different parts, as throughout the whole year, I at some point am sucked into a vortex of gaming pleasure. If it be baseball season, then yes, I will be playing a baseball video game, or once the snow falls, I tend to switch over to hockey.

Anyways, with that random rant aside, Madden season is coming, as in just a couple of months, Madden 09 gets released with you know who...Brett Favre on the cover. Anyways, the staff over at IGN.com has been posting some preview information and this year's game is looking to be very good. On this great Friday, take some liberty out of your day to check out the below link which previews Madden 09:

MADD Against GTA IV

After my previous post today about Grand Theft Auto IV, it did not take long for me to find an organization that is against the sale of GTA IV.

Earlier today, it was brought to my attention that MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) is trying to get GTA IV taken off store shelves due to "drunken driving" being included in the game.

MADD Protests GTA 4 Over Drunk Driving Scene

Below is a video portraying how gamers can drive drunk in GTA IV...

If you'd ask me, trying to ban a game for something as minor as a "public drunkenness" feature is pretty lame. Sure it's MADD's thing to make a stand against it, but to ban a game for something as minor as this is flat out stupid. I have seen the drunk driving feature in this game, and not one bit did it make me want to go out and attempt driving drunk, and I do not think it is that harmful. In addition, the game suggests you should grab a cab ride home, so in playing GTA IV, the gamer is educated that drinking/driving is not a winning combination.

Nonetheless, this article is interesting to say the least and I am very anxious to see if MADD will be able to persuade politicians to possibly ban this game.

GTA IV - First Impressions

Yesterday was a key date in the world of video games, as Grand Theft Auto IV was released on the PlayStation 3 and XBox 360 platforms. Being an avid gamer, and a fan of the GTA series, I decided to stop at my local video game store on the way home from work and pick up the game for the PlayStation 3. Here is my brief rundown of how it is so far after owning the game for two nights.

Before I get into details, there is both the regular GTA IV game, as well as a special edition that contains both the game and a bunch of accessories. I ended up purchasing the special edition of GTA IV with the extra accessories, and I thought I'd first breakdown what was in the bonus edition:
  • GTA IV Lock Box
  • Book highlighting the various artwork in GTA IV
  • Official GTA IV Soundtrack CD
  • GTA IV Duffel Bag
  • Grand Theft Auto IV PS3 Game

The added bonuses you get in buying the special edition seemed like a great reason to purchase the special edition in my opinion. The lock box looks amazing sitting on my shelf, and has a very solid design to it. In addition, the GTA IV artwork book contained lots of interesting drawings and sketches relating to different aspects of the game as well. The special edition also comes with a GTA duffel bag, which probably won't be used by me when I go workout at the gym, but was a neat little add-in. Finally, the special edition contains an official soundtrack CD that was pretty disappointing to say the least, as lots of the main recognizable tracks were not on this disc (ex - Kanye West - "Flashing Lights").

Having played the game for two days so far, I am speechless as to how great this game is. At first, playing GTA IV seems weird, as the graphics/game play on the next gen console produce a completely different feeling for those playing the game. You notice such things as the realistic behavior when your driving vehicles, characters have more graphical movements to them on next-gen consoles, the overall game environment itself is much more detailed than past installments of GTA, and much much more. After about ten minutes though, I got over the weird feeling and truly began enjoying this game on the PS3, as I went around town and wrecked havoc.

Just to give you an idea of how crazy this game is, upon playing this game for the first two hours, I managed to...

  • Rack up a 5-Star Wanted Level - Got killed by fire from a FBI helicopter.
  • Staggered outside a bar drunk with a 3-Star Wanted Level. I then attempted to drive drunk before crashing my car and then getting shot up my police.
  • Went bowling at the local bowling alley in the game.
  • Crash my car so hard into another vehicle that my character went through the windshield and landed on the pavement.

Graphically, this game is simply amazing, as you see all sorts of stuff, ranging from people opening umbrellas on the street during the rain, to your car having both low/hi-beam light animations. The more and more I have played this game, suttle things continue to pop out and attract my attention, which truly makes me appreciate the next generation graphics for this game. If there is one thing for sure, Rockstar Games has taken graphics to the next level in the Grand Theft Auto series, as the graphics in this game are an overall 10 for sure.

Not only are the graphics great, but the game play itself is phenomenal as well. The way other characters act in GTA IV shows the A.I. in this game is very good and realistic. Some examples of this are pedestrians opening up newspapers and reading while walking the streets, drivers honking their horns after you cut them off, and many other actions that people on the street do in reaction to what your user-controlled character Nikko is doing.

Up until this point, I have only done a handful of missions, as I've been mainly wandering the streets of GTA and have been exploring the world of Liberty City so far. The missions I have done however have been very easy, and seemed to be "raw missions" that are getting me setup with the game's main storyline. Although these missions have been done with ease, I am positive the missions will get progressively harder as I get further in the game, so I am not really worried about the overall difficulty of this game.

Having played this game for two days, I am overall very impressed. Rockstar Games has done yet another great job in releasing an excellent installment in their GTA series, and from top to bottom this game gets 10's in my book. If you have not grabbed this game yet, I suggest you go purchase it at your local electronics store, because if your a big video gamer, this is one you must add to your collection.

Grand Theft Auto IV Update

Many people (including me) are anticipating the release of Grand Theft Auto IV by Rockstar Games in a couple of weeks. For me, it seems to have been a long time since Rockstar Games released "GTA San Andreas". With the newest installment of GTA debuting on the next generation consoles, I am excited to get my hands on a copy the day it comes out. Just a couple of days ago, I even went out and reserved my copy of GTA IV for the PS3 console.

Well today, while browsing the headlines over at IGN.com, they revealed a couple of new radio stations that will be in the new Grand Theft Auto IV game. Be sure to head on over to the Official GTA IV Website for more details.

Also, below is a widget I grabbed off the GTA website, full of information pertaining to GTA IV :

Enjoy!

My Brand New System

So in my previous post, I voiced my current displeasure about my XBox 360. Sure its a great system, but at the same time, Microsoft's gaming console has been a pain in the ass with the slew of technical problems that have come with purchasing the system.

After writing this article about my 360, the thought of purchasing a PlayStation 3 truly invaded my head for the first time. Sure whenever I've been having problems with my XBox 360, the thought of owning a PS3 has come to my mind, but with my games freezing up more and more as of late, the thought has gotten even bigger. As I went to bed Monday night, I sat in my bed seriously contemplating going to the store and purchasing a PS3 on Tuesday morning.

When I woke up Tuesday, I still felt like getting PlayStation3. With MLB 08: The Show set to be released as well, it gave me another reason to want to grab the PS3 from a store shelf. So after doing some thinking, reading up on the console a little bit more, I figured I was going to go through with this purchase.

I went to my local Best Buy, and ended up picking up both a PS3 and MLB 08. I was lucky as I was able to get a free copy of Spiderman 3 on Blue-Ray with my PS3 purchase. Still having PS3 fever after going to Best Buy, I also ran over to a local video game store and reserved my copy of GTA IV for yes...the PS3.

Upon arriving home, I hooked up the PS3 and played MLB 08: The Show. After about two hours of playing, I was very satisfied with the purchase. MLB 08 was a great first game to buy, and I've really enjoyed playing it thus far. Also with GTA set to come out in 54 days, I am now anxiously awaiting the release of that game onto the PS3 as well.

Looking back at buying the PS3, the decision was a tough one, but I think it was the right move. Sure the XBox 360 has been fun to play, but since purchasing the PS3, I have yet to even touch my 360. Also, the relief of not having any flashing red lights, disc read errors and frozen games to deal with has been a welcomed change as well.
