Poor Sports in Utah

If you watched Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals between the Utah Jazz and San Antonio Spurs on Monday night, you saw the worst display of sportsmanship in the 2007 NBA playoffs thus far. No, it was not Jerry Sloan getting ejected, nor was it Derek Fisher getting the heave ho at the end of the game either. This honor goes to the sold out crowd packed inside of Energy Solutions Arena who constantly jeering the basketball officials over the course of the game.

Throughout the game, there were several moments where the Jazz fans booed the officials, chanted "Refs you s***!" and from an overall perspective, made this NBA playoff game look like an European soccer match with all the whistling and jeering that went on. Not only was the behavior by the fans alone a display of poor sportsmanship, but what bugged me even more was that the fans had no reason to yell at the officials, as the officiating crew did a great job reffing this crucial playoff game. Even the trio of commentators televising the game on ESPN felt the same way as they mutually agreed that the officials did a great job and said so on the air several times. The real proof in the pudding however was shown in the replays as whenever there was a questionable call, close-up replays shown on TV showed the officials getting calls right, which basically was like evidence of OJ Simpson's glove not fitting in the court of law.

Sure, its one thing to get on referees for screwing up a certain call, but what was going on in Utah tonight was a totally absurd situation as the fans harped on the officials frequently. Being a basketball official myself, I watched part of this game on ESPN, and the Utah fans were frequently arguing over stuff that wasn't even that controversial. All in all, if I had to compare the Jazz fans tonight to somebody, it would have to be Rasheed Wallace, the most factious player in the NBA today. This is because at times, it seemed that there were 19,911 carbon copies of him in the stands complaining about every little call...just like Rasheed does in real life.

The Jazz fans went that extra mile to try and protect their undefeated home playoff record at home. Too bad they did it in poor taste, and proved to be a very spiteful bunch, in the process.

Sweet Day O' Mine...

So today is the official Memorial Day. Stores, banks, post offices and almost anything people normally would go to during the day are closed. Many people see this as a day to relax and get together with friends. I see it as an opportunity to view a plethora of sports action on the television, as professional sports do not take this day off by any means. I will point out that other major holidays (i.e. Christmas) are taken off by professional sports associations, but on Memorial Day, its a great day to watch sports.

Today there will be countless games on television, and I'm hoping to catch them all. With such a large amount of baseball games, a big playoff basketball game and Stanley Cup final hockey game on television, one would be stupid not to take advantage of all this salivating sports action (Note: "salivating" is a word trademarked by Bill Walton, so I use this word with his permission).

Anyways...here is a quick rundown of all the action...

12:00 pm NCAA Lacrosse Championship - John Hopkins vs Duke - ESPN
1:05 pm Major League Baseball - Twins vs White Sox - FSN North/WGN
1:20 pm Major League Baseball - Cubs vs Marlins - Not on TV, but I'll watch it online
7:00 pm Stanley Cup Finals (Game One) - Senators vs Ducks - VERSUS
7:00 pm NBA Eastern Conference Finals (Game Four) - Spurs vs Jazz - ESPN
7:00 pm Arena Football - New York at New Orleans - ESPN2

If your like me, you should take this opportunity to watch these various sporting events on the airwaves today/tonight. The Senators/Ducks should be a good game, as people have eagerly been awaiting the Stanley Cup Finals to start ever since the Ducks clinched their spot in the finals last week. The same can be said about the Spurs/Jazz, as they play the 4th game of their best-of-seven series on ESPN. That should be quite the dogfight too (Michael Vick may be confused by that comment as there will be no pit bulls involved), as Deron Williams, the Jazz point guard is battling the flu, and is a game-time decision. So buckle your seat belts...turn up the volume...hit up the picture in picture...grab some food...perhaps a beer...and lay witness to one of the great days of professional sports!

Gas Prices are too high...

If there is one thing that is ripping off America these days, it is the price of gasoline. As many people know, the price of gas has increased slightly over the past couple years, but in the past year alone, it has jumped to all time highs. This past Friday, I went to fill up The Silver Accord and a full tank of gas cost a pricey $41 at over three dollars a gallon. This is a far outcry to what most people pay, as I drive a fairly economical car that gets great gas mileage. After getting my full tank of gas, I thought while I drove on the road about what the future of gas prices will bring. Since filling up with gas, Memorial Day weekend has been going on this weekend, and it has resulted in the price of gas increasing again. I figured I'd take an opportunity to discuss gas prices on my blog and give my opinion on the topic, as well as what the rise of gas prices has done to citizens in the United States (and lets not forget those Canadians living to the north too :-P).

When looking at gas prices from an overall standpoint, the greed of gas companies has gotten out of control and has resulted in the price of gas being outrageously high. Looking online today, I noticed that a gallon of gas averages a cost of $3.19 across the United States, which is an increase of 36 cents from this same one year ago. Whats even worse, is that these rising trends are going to continue, as some experts are even saying that in another year, gas could rise up to over $4.00 a gallon, something I never thought would happen. With the price of gas rising, many people are not happy, as gas is a vital need to the transportation system in the United States. With people using gas to power up cars, boats, motorcycles, lawnmowers, four-wheelers, you name it, gas is proven to be a very important resource. The sudden rise of gas prices has not only angered society, but it has resulted in the whole nation showing their displeasure over gas prices in numerous ways.

For starters, there have been various news stories that you see appearing on television, in newspapers, magazines, etc. about the price of oil and various subtopics. Since its such a large topic of discussion these days in the United States, every media outlet is doing what they can to offer their own two cents on the topic. One interesting method in particular that has attracted my eye is people who have voiced their opinion about high gas prices through Facebook, a social networking utility for people. Being a member of Facebook, I have seen many different groups talking about gas, but never looked at how many there were. Upon looking, there are over 500+ groups on Facebook that talked about gas prices. These group ranged to be about topics such as how we can get gas prices lowered, people voicing their displeasure about rising gas prices, and other various topics. When looking at the increased coverage about rising gas prices, I find it all interesting because about five years ago, gas prices, oil rigs, and supply/demand were seldom mentioned words in conversations. In today's world, these words, and many others are common words that are heard in discussions wherever you go.

With there being so many negatives about gas prices lately, I'd like to take time out to point out some of the overseen positive things to come from gas prices increasing. One thing that jumps out at me is the variety of websites that go into detail about high gasoline prices (ex - TwinCitiesGasPrices.com). These sites enable people to find gas stations with the cheapest gas prices online. In addition to this, car companies are doing their part as they are trying to improve gas mileage in their new car models. This includes such methods as making their new cars more fuel efficient, offering free gas for people who purchase cars from dealerships and creating hybrid vehicles that run on electricity and ethanol fuels. Higher gas prices have also prompted businesses to help consumers out as radio stations, newspaper companies and various websites online offer giveaways where people have the opportunity to get free gas. All of these positives reflect the conscious effort that has been made by people to make the best out of a bad situation. Makes me wonder if any of this would even exist if gas prices were in a lower range. Would we care that much if gas was lower??? Probably not.

Taken as a whole, I feel gas prices are something that is a complete joke, and that in the future, things need to change. For starters, many people cite the increase of gas prices due to increased demand and lower supply of oil. That is not the case. The demand for oil has increased, but it has not grown in such a fashion whereas it has been the wholehearted reason for the increase of gas prices. The main reason for increase has to do with our overall oil supply. When looking at the supply, there is plenty of oil in the world, and oil companies could produce a lot more oil than they have currently been producing. If oil companies would start drilling for oil in more locations, and producing more oil barrels per day, this would drive down gas prices in a heartbeat as the demand would decrease, and the supply would increase. Instead, they have been producing less oil, rather than more, which has resulted in both raised demand for oil and increased prices at the pump.

In my opinion, oil companies need to stop being so greedy, and lower gas prices. Our world has become so dependent on oil that even though they are raising gas prices, we still buy, no matter what the cost is. Just thinking of how much money they are making for each barrel sold is sickening, and its something that if continued, could get way out of control. Its encouraging to see that people are starting to boycott certain gas stations, not buy gas on certain days, and this needs to continue, as our voice needs to be heard towards the gas companies.

If you are still reading my post to this point, I'd like to conclude by saying, don't buy gas from Exxon or Mobil. They are the two largest oil companies, and if people band together and choose not to purchase gas from them, prices of gas WILL go down. Also, there have been several days (the last being May 15th), where people have boycotted gasoline purchases. If any future dates come up, I will post them on my blog, as I would encourage you to participate in those as well.

OK...I am done ranting...for now.

Cubs/Dodgers -- Game Numero Uno

With a night of nothing on tap for me, I decided to watch the Cubs and Dodgers game on WGN. Its the first game of the series tonight, and I am bored with nothing else to do, so I am going to blog the action that takes place in my apartment tonight.

9:40 - First pitch of the night...the game has begun. I establish my seat on the couch, and get comfortable for the next three hours.

9:55 - Time to break out the sunflower seeds. Tonight's flavor of choice is the David's Ranch flavored seeds. I even go out of the way to cut open a Mountain Dew container to make a nice little spitting cup for my disposal.

10:25 - Time has passed from the last post, but the Cubs now find themselves in a 3-0 hole to the Dodgers thanks to Jeff Kent's second inning home run. I'd give Ted Lily an assist, as he basically threw a meaty fastball down the middle for Kent to hit. This results in some seed chewing, as I cannot stand the Cubs when they give up runs.

10:30 - With a runner on and no out, Derrek Lee steps up to the plate. First pitch, he swings and hits into a tailor made 6-4-3 double play. Its the second double play of the game, and from the looks of it, this game alone could become a drinking game of sorts for diehard Cubs fans. Every double play...tilt your beer can and DRINK UP!

10:45 - Jeff Kent hits an RBI double. With four RBI's and the Cubs down now 5-0 in the 5th inning, I proceed to stop the bleeding by turning off the television.

Til death do us part...

This past weekend, I read a video game magazine that talked about the XBox 360 and how people have been having troubles with their consoles failing on them. Its something that has become more and more evident as of late as the number of reported cases by 360 owners have increased.
The failing 360 console is signified by three flashing lights on the power button, which have been referred to by experts as the "three rings of death". This name is given because when this happens, for the most part, you are SOL as your XBox 360 does not work after this happens. Whats even more weird is that there are no signs of this failure coming, and out of the blue, you get the three flashing red lights and you are stuck with an inoperable XBox 360.

Upon buying my XBox 360 about nine months ago, I never envisioned this problem happening to me. I figured if I took good care of my hardware, and treated it well, I would be out of the blue. About two months after I bought it, I had my first case of the three rings of death. However, upon turning my console on a second time, the lights went away and the problem never did return...well until about six months later that is.

Today, after playing a game of NBA2k7, I turned off my XBox and ate my lunch. Later in the afternoon, I booted up my XBox to play a game of hockey, and bam...the three red lights appeared. My initial reaction was to just reboot my 360 and the problem would go away, but it didn't. After turning off my XBox about 10 times however, I finally realized the problem wasn't going away. My XBox was toast.

There is some good news to come of this story. For starters, Microsoft said my XBox 360 is still under warranty, and that I will get a free replacement one at no cost. In addition to this, they will also pay for all of the shipping costs incurred by this transaction (I guess Bill Gates does have some pretty deep pockets).
Until I receive my new 360, it looks like I am "without sticks" for two weeks, as I will have no video games to play. I'll probably use this time to intensify my job search for a full-time job, devote more time to this blog that hasn't been updated lately, as well as many other types of constructive time-management activities.
