Saving Gas...The Hypermiling Way
With gas prices up in arms currently, I've noticed a lot of information lately about a driving technique called hypermiling. For those of you who don't know what hypermiling is, Urban Dictionary defines it as:
"Driving techniques and car mods aimed at increasing your gas mileage to
the absolute max. Often practiced with a Toyota Prius or other hybrid
vehicle." - Urban Dictionary Definition of Hypermiling
With gas prices currently priced at over $4.00, the idea of hypermiling is beginning to take off across the United States. The person who is credited with coming up with the idea of hypermiling, currently gets nearly doubled the average MPG for a Honda Accord, as he is getting 50 miles per gallon.
While you don't exactly need a hybrid vehicle to be able to hypermile, its an interesting concept nonetheless that I will be trying with my new 2008 Civic Si that I recently purchased. Currently, I have been getting 30mpg out of my car, which has an estimated 22-29 mpg. Having not really employed many hypermiling tactics, it will be interesting to see how high my gas mileage goes once I decide to lay off the accelerator/brakes and drive the Hypermile way.
